The gear lists for each event are compulsory. If you wish to carry extra items that you would usually take when running or walking then please do so.
Race Tekapo has multiple Aid Stations around each course. You do not need to take any nutrition or hydration with you - unless you want to.
We highly recommend you use trail shoes for the event as the courses are mainly off-road.
Lake Tekapo is 710m above sea level. The event is at a time of year (and location) where any weather is possible. Mt John is 1031m above sea level and very exposed. Please respect our gear requirements and remember: gear is there for when things go wrong, not when things are going right.
There are no gear requirements for the 5km event or Kids Dash, although ensure you check the weather forecast and dress appropriately.
Survival Bags/Emergency Bags are far superior to a Survival Blanket in exposed conditions.
Survival bags are like a rubbish sack that you can climb inside and tighten up around your shoulders. The cost of a bag is minimum (around $15), and should be in your kit for outdoor use in general.
We will not accept a blanket over a bag no matter the weather on the day, so please do not question our decision surrounding this. You can purchase a Survival Bag from most outdoors stores, including Outside Sports in Lake Tekapo.
50K and 32K events:
Compulsory Gear Checks.
RANDOM GEAR CHECKS will occur on the morning of the race. If your number is called out prior to the race start you will be required to pop over to the Registration tent to get your gear checked off.
Compulsory Gear is required regardless of the weather forecast due to the length of your event and the remote location of some of the course routes.
No gear checks will be done on Friday 12th September at Race Registration.
21K, 16K, and 12K events:
On Friday 12th September the Race Director along with the Safety Manager will decide if the Compulsory Gear can become Recommended Gear. The team will be making a decision based on weather forecasts and track conditions for race day. This will be announced on Friday 12th September via email and social media. Please come prepared for alpine weather - if we do compulsory gear checks and you do not have the correct gear then you will not be able to race.
IF THE WEATHER FORECAST DEEMS IT NECESSARY TO CARRY COMPULSORY GEAR, WE WILL DO RANDOM GEAR CHECKS FOR THE 21KM, 16KM, AND 12KM EVENTS on the morning of the race. If you are not carrying gear you will be disqualified from the race.
