Take on the classic half marathon distance, the The Frontrunner Timaru 21km. This course starts and finishes on the edge of Lake Tekapo, allowing spectators and supporters the chance to cheer you on right by the village centre. Once you start you head up the sharp ascent to the summit of Mt John. The ascent is challenging but super rewarding - once you reach the top you have jaw-dropping 360 degree views of the southern alps and surrounding area. The Mt John Observatory sits at the summit and you will see why it is a special place to visit - perhaps even tempting you to book your own Star Gazing experience while you are in town! The Mt John loop is run in a way to make the most of the incredible views, and mostly as a downhill. Once you descend Mt John you will run along the side of the lake, taking you back past the Race Village and the spectators as you head around to other side of Lake Tekapo. The second section of the half marathon is just as scenic. You will cross over the arched pedestrian bridge, run right alongside the world-famous Church of the Good Shepherd, and into the towns best-kept secret, the Regional Park. This forest section is truly magical, giving you glimpses of the surrounding mountains and rugged landscape that the Mackenzie District is renowned for. Once you weave your way through the forest you will pop out lake-side, allowing you to run right beside the water as you head back to the finish area.
This course is a jewel in the crown of half marathon's in New Zealand. It offers a great variety of terrain, with breathtaking views that are right up there with anything you will find around the world. Come and see for yourself!
