Make sure you stick around after you finish your race to enjoy music, food vendors, and a great atmosphere!
The 12km event gives you the most scenery packed into 12km anywhere in the country, possibly the world. With Mt John the main feature of this course, you get to enjoy 12km of breath-taking views the entire way. The race starts and finishes at the side of Lake Tekapo, allowing spectators and supporters a great opportunity to cheer you on. Once you set off you will head straight up Mt John - a short and sharp ascent to what will leave you breathless in more ways then one. The summit has 360 degree views of the surrounding area, it will perfectly acceptable to stop and take some photos! For those keen for a fast time, the remainder of the Mt John loop will allow you to pick up the pace as you head along the top and down to the lake edge. You then head along the side of the lake, past the entrance to the Hot Pools (which you will certainly want to enjoy after your efforts!), and back to the cheers at the finish area.
If you want a challenge, but not feeling up for the 21km or 32km, the 12km event is perfect for you. The course is more challenging than a traditional 10km race, adding on some elevation and a couple of km's. And with scenery that will stay with you for a life-time, the 12km race is well worth a go.
The 12km event can be entered as a run or a walk.
The gear list below is compulsory. If you wish to carry extra items that you would usually take when running then please do so. While the Aid Stations will supply you with nutrition at various points along the course, it is recommended you carry with you any extra items you might require during the 16km - including any specific nutrition or fluid the Aid Stations may not provide.
On Friday 20th September the Race Director along with the Safety Manager will decide if the Compulsory Gear can become Recommended Gear. The team will be making a decision based on weather forecasts and track conditions for race day. This will be announced on Friday 20th September via email and social media. Please come prepared for alpine weather - if we do compulsory gear checks and you do not have the correct gear then you will not be able to race.
IF THE WEATHER FORECAST DEEMS IT NECESSARY TO CARRY COMPULSORY GEAR, WE WILL DO RANDOM GEAR CHECKS FOR THE 21KM, 16KM, AND 12KM EVENTS on the morning of the race. If you are not carrying gear you will be disqualified from the race.
Remember: no gear checks will be done on Friday 20th September at Race Registration. Random gear checks will be done on race day prior to your race starting. If announced, the compulsory gear may be dropped to ‘recommended gear’ - check your email and social media on Friday 20th September for any updates.
