The Race Tekapo 16km event gives you a fast and flat-ish course, while still making the most of the scenery on offer. With no major ascents during the 16km distance this is the perfect addition to Race Tekapo, allowing those of you who aren't as fussed on hills to still be able to enjoy a decent run or walk in the stunning Mackenzie Region.
The race starts and finishes at the side of Lake Tekapo, allowing spectators and supporters a great opportunity to cheer you on. Once you set off you will head across the iconic Tekapo footbridge and past the most photographed church in the world, the Church of The Good Shepherd. You will then wind your way through the Regional Park, enjoying the towering trees above and soft trails underfoot. Once you reach your first Aid Station you then head through a gate and out onto the amazing Sawdon Station. This part of the course is on the Lagoon Loop track and the trails take you out across this incredible high country station to a small lagoon. You then head back towards the Regional Park where you will take different trails back to the lakes edge. You then take the well formed foot paths and tracks back to the Race Village, where we will be waiting for you with your well-deserved medal.
This course is best described as undulating, with only approximately 200m of elevation throughout. Competitors get to enjoy the famous landmarks of Lake Tekapo, as well as stunning vistas of mountains, high country stations, and of course Lake Tekapo.
The 16km event can be entered as a run or a walk.
